Groove Theory is an American R&B duo, with former member, singer-songwriter Amel Larrieux and songwriter/producer/actor, Bryce Wilson. The group is best known for their 1995 pop/R&B hit, "Tell Me," which reached the top five of Billboard 's Hot 100 and the US Billboard R&B chart.

"Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" is a song written by Maxwell and released in 1966 on the album .

It was called a "masterpiece" by several critics that viewed it as a departure from the mainstream, hip hop-oriented R&B of the time. Maxwell was compared to soul singers of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Marvin Gaye and Prince. 
The Washington Post called him "the Marvin Gaye of the '90s. The single "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)", debuted on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks in August 1996 at number 11, eventually peaking number eight and spending 29 weeks on the chart. It spent eighteen weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 36 on September 28, 1996. The single also peaked at number 25 on the Rhythmic Top 40 and at number five on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales.

"Why Didn't You Call Me" is the fourth and final single from Macy Gray's debut album, "On How Life Is" (1999). In the UK, "Why Didn't You Call Me" became Gray's third consecutive top forty hit on the UK Singles Chart. The single also peaked at number twenty-five on the Adult Top 40 in the U.S. as well as number twenty-nine on the Top 40 Mainstream chart, but missed the Billboard Hot 100 and only managed to chart on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles at number seven.

"Mahogany Soul" is the second studio album by American R&B-soul singer–songwriter Angie Stone, released in the United States on October 16, 2001 by J Records. The single "Wish I Didn't Miss You" peaked at number seven in Australia. She is an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and occasional actress. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. She is more successful on the charts R&B charts, with four Top 10 albums, forms including a number one album and 10 singles on the R&B chart, including a Top 10. She sold over 1.4 millions albums in U.S. and sold over 5 millions albums worldwide.

As disco and funk were dominating the charts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, soul went in the direction of quiet storm. With its relaxed tempos and soft melodies, quiet storm soul took influences from soft rock and adult contemporary. Many funk bands, such as Con Funk Shun, Cameo, and Lakeside would have a few quiet storm tracks on their albums. Among the most successful acts in this era include Smokey Robinson, Teddy Pendergrass, Peabo Bryson, Atlantic Starr, and Larry Graham.

Contemporary R&B (also known as simply R&B) is a music genre that combines elements of hip hop, soul, R&B and funk. Contemporary R&B and urban pop began between 1991 to 1998. It became less raw and more slickly produced, resulting in a style known as contemporary R&B, which sounded very different from the original rhythm and blues style.
Popular artists include Salt-n-Pepa, Groove Theory, Diana King, 3T, Brownstone, Shanice, Paula Abdul, Usher, Aaliyah, Keith Sweat, R. Kelly, TLC, Seal, Brandy, Monica, Tevin Campbell, Maxi Priest, Shaggy and Toni Braxton. 
The United States saw the development of neo-soul around 1994. Neo soul is a term coined by music industry entrepreneur Kedar Massenburg during the late 1990s to market and describe a style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B. Heavily based in soul music, neo soul is distinguished by a less conventional sound than its contemporary R&B counterpart, with incorporated elements ranging from jazz, funk, and hip hop to pop fusion and African music. It has been noted by music writers for its classicist influences, conscious-driven lyrics, and strong female presence.
